National Eclipse Meter

The largest Zonnedimmer in the Netherlands

Today we are not dimming the sun. The moon does it for us.

Measuring starts as soon as the eclipse begins.

How we measure this

The national estimate is calculated by the Zonnedimmer web app from a sample of participating installations. This page only displays those figures and does not recompute them.

We compare current generation with the expected generation without an eclipse. The difference is the estimated eclipse effect. The sample is scaled up per province to the total installed capacity.

How accurate is this? The meter runs on a sample of about 10,000 installations, roughly 0.3 percent of the some 3.3 million solar installations in the Netherlands. That makes the eclipse effect in percent a good approximation, usually accurate to within a few percent. It holds up because the scaling cancels out once you look at a percentage.

The generation in absolute watts and kilowatt-hours is an indicative estimate and can be off by tens of percent. That depends on how representative our customer base is and on the timing just before sunset.

All figures are aggregated and indicative, and are not an official measurement. We never show individual installations or customer locations. During a temporary outage you see the last available measurement.
