On 1 January 2027 net metering (the Dutch salderingsregeling) ends. Electricity you feed back during the day then no longer cancels out electricity you use in the evening. What you can do depends on your contract and your own usage. This is not contract advice.
What changes on your energy bill.
From 2027 you pay energy tax and VAT on all electricity you take from your supplier. Electricity you generate and use straight away is not taxed (ACM ConsuWijzer).
Does your contract run past 1 January? Then your supplier splits your consumption and feed-in into two periods: until 31 December 2026 inclusive, and from 1 January 2027 (ACM).
An example for the tax part only: you feed back 2,000 kWh and later take 2,000 kWh from the grid. With net metering you pay no tax on that. Without it, you do.
Worked example, tax only (2026 rate, rounded).
- Electricity you used to offset
- 2,000 kWh
- Energy tax plus VAT per kWh
- ± € 0.11
- Extra tax without net metering
- ± € 220
For 2027 about 10.6 cents per kWh has been proposed, VAT included (Tax Plan 2027, not yet final; Energievergelijk.nl, 16 September 2026). So the amount stays about the same. But you do get paid for what you feed back.
What you get and pay for feeding back.
Your supplier pays you for electricity you feed back. Until 2030 this feed-in payment must be at least 50% of the power price before tax (Rijksoverheid, the Dutch government).
Your supplier may also charge for that electricity: the feed-in costs. These may only be real processing costs, supervised by ACM (the Dutch market regulator). Some suppliers still spread these costs over all their customers. From 2027 they go to customers with solar panels (ACM).
So watch the difference. According to ACM, the costs can sometimes be higher than the payment. Then feeding back costs you money.
From 1 January 2027 feed-in costs appear on your bill in euros per kWh fed back. Suppliers show in their offers how they calculate those costs. How they build up the costs is up to them (amendment to the Energieregeling, Staatscourant, 1 September 2026).
Nearly all suppliers pay exactly the legal minimum (Energievergelijk.nl, 1 October 2026). Some had not yet finalised their 2027 rates, the editors noted below that article (3 October 2026).
Fixed or dynamic: what it means for your solar panels.
Your payment per type of contract (ACM):
- Fixed: your supplier sets the payment and cannot change it during the term.
- Variable: the payment may only change if your contract or terms say so, with at least a month’s notice.
- Dynamic: your payment follows the power price, which can change every quarter hour or hour.
The market price per hour (the day-ahead price) was negative for 400 hours in 2026 up to 27 October. That is what Eerlijk Verbruik reports (as of 26 October 2026).
In 2026 you hardly notice this. Net metering gives you the tax back on what you feed in. So your own price is negative for only a few hours a year. From 2027 you pay to feed back at a negative market price, because you no longer get that tax back (Eerlijk Verbruik).
Use more yourself, feed back less.
Power you use while the sun shines is power you do not have to buy. From 2027 that is often worth more than feeding it back. Run the washing machine, dishwasher and dryer during the day, for example. Or charge your electric car, or run your hot-water boiler then.
Smart dimming with a dynamic contract.
Dimming means your panels produce less for a while. With a dynamic contract it pays off at a negative price: you then do not pay to feed back. See also what dimming earns you.
You can switch your panels off yourself, but you have to remember to. With the free app it happens automatically, and you choose how far we dim. Dimming at a negative price only works with a dynamic contract. With Enphase and Huawei your panels switch off completely and then back on.
Switching off completely is not the same as smart dimming. For when switching off pays off, see turning off solar panels from 2027.
Dimming for your energy supplier is not available yet. We aim for spring 2027, if the supplier takes part. You can already give consent (dimming for your energy supplier).
What does dimming earn you?
Choose your contract and enter your address to see what dimming earns you.
- Dimming at a negative price: depends on your situation € 30–50 per year, from 2027 With a dynamic contract we dim automatically when your electricity price is negative. Our calculation value, not a promise.
- Compensation from Enexis: depends on your situation € 0.25 per dimmed kWh In ten areas selected by Enexis, with a fixed contract too. When you sign up, you see right away whether your address is in one.
- Lower feed-in costs with the dongle: depends on your situation From 2027 with a fixed contract With a fixed contract, if your supplier charges more in feed-in costs than you get in compensation. € 49.95, reserved with a free account; not yet with Enphase and Huawei.
Fixed contract: what dimming does earn you.
Do you live in one of the ten areas selected by Enexis? Then dimming already earns you € 0.25 per dimmed kWh, also with a fixed contract.
On top of that, the dongle (a small box on your smart meter) can pay off from 2027. You leave its “Minimise feed-in” mode on all the time. Your panels then produce about what your home uses.
That only pays off if your feed-in costs are higher than your feed-in payment. According to ACM that can sometimes be the case. Do you still get something net for feeding in? Then you give up that income.
The Zonnedimmer dongle costs € 49.95 one-off, shipping included. You first need a Zonnedimmer account, and you order through a reservation. The mode does not yet work with Enphase and Huawei.
Put the feed-in costs and the payment per kWh side by side. Your contract states whether your supplier charges feed-in costs and how high they are (ACM). Is it a fixed amount? Then ask whether it goes down if you feed back less.

Find your contract and end date.
It decides how your payment works.
Look up your 2027 rates.
Compare the payment with the feed-in costs.
Write down your meter readings on 31 December.
Then you can check the split.
Want your panels dimmed automatically?
Sign up for free and connect your inverter. Then you choose in the app who may dim your panels.
Frequently asked questions.
Can my supplier charge feed-in costs from 2027?
Yes, but only for the costs it incurs to process your electricity. ACM supervises this.
Do I pay tax on electricity I generate and use myself?
No. You pay tax on electricity you take from your supplier. Electricity you generate and use straight away is not taxed.
What happens to my contract if it runs past 1 January 2027?
Your supplier splits your consumption and feed-in into two parts: before and after 1 January 2027. That is what ACM says.
Can Zonnedimmer help once net metering ends?
Yes. With a dynamic contract we dim your panels at a negative price. In the ten areas selected by Enexis you receive € 0.25 per dimmed kWh, also with a fixed contract. From 2027 the dongle lets you limit your feed-in, if your feed-in costs are higher than your payment (only with an account through a reservation; not yet with Enphase and Huawei).
